PUERTO RICAN PAROT
- The Puerto Rican Parrot is one of the top 10 endangered species in the world.
- There were only 20 of these parrots left after Hurracaine Hugo hit in 1989.
- It is the only native parrot in Puerto Rico. They need trees to nest and live.
Why they are endangered???
- Early settlers deforested 85% of the island trees.
- The parrots only had the trees of El Yunque to survive.
- Also, parrot hunting was allowed.
Nowadays there are other threats to the Puerto Rican parrot.
- The Pearly eyed Thrasher is an aggressive bird who has invaded the parrots nesting areas.
- Honeybees have also taken over nesting areas in the trees leaving the parrots with less trees to nest on.
