PUERTO RICAN PAROT

  • The Puerto Rican Parrot is one of the top 10 endangered species in the world.
  • There were only 20 of these parrots left after Hurracaine Hugo hit in 1989.
  • It is the only native parrot in Puerto Rico. They need trees to nest and live.

Why they are endangered???

  • Early settlers deforested 85% of the island trees.
  • The parrots only had the trees of El Yunque to survive.
  • Also, parrot hunting was allowed.

Nowadays there are other threats to the Puerto Rican parrot.

  • The Pearly eyed Thrasher is an aggressive bird who  has invaded the parrots nesting areas.
  • Honeybees have also taken over nesting areas in the trees leaving the parrots with less trees to nest on.
